His Excellency Ambassador Darko Angelov is the Ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia to Hungary and Nigeria and a Distinguished Fellow of New Westminster College. He earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honors degree in Political Science and Social Geography from Utrecht University in the Netherlands and a Master of Arts degree in International Relations and European Studies from the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary; both degrees with a full, merit-based scholarship, and he has specializations in international relations and security studies.

Ambassador Angelov has a distinguished record of ethical leadership and is a foreign affairs professional, currently serving as Macedonia’s ambassador to Hungary with concurrent accreditation to Nigeria and Kazakhstan. Ambassador Angelov has an extensive professional experience in various aspects of international relations, such as from the perspective of government, international organizations, think-tanks and non-governmental organizations. In the past years he has worked for the Macedonian government, briefly as an assistant to the government spokesperson, responsible for foreign media, then as a chief of staff and foreign policy adviser to the President of the Republic of Macedonia, and now as an ambassador in Budapest, Hungary.

More than half of his working experience is related to work with intergovernmental organizations, such as the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), where he was involved in the political and legal cooperation and analysis of the two organization’s relationship with the countries of the Balkans and with the Russian Federation. Furthermore, Ambassador Angelov has had stints of working for think-tanks and NGOs, such as the International Crisis Group, the United Nations War-torn Societies Project, and has been an elections observer for the OSCE-ODIHR and the European Association of Elections Monitoring Organizations in the Ukraine, Serbia and Macedonia. In the past fifteen years Darko has lived, worked and studied in five countries (Macedonia, the Netherlands, Hungary, France and briefly in Russia).

The combination of having the experience of holding senior positions in both the governmental, nongovernmental and intergovernmental sectors, gives Ambassador Angelov a wide and deep perspective on global and regional political, social and economic affairs, with a particular focus to South-eastern, Central and Eastern Europe.

Ambassador Angelov is the recipient of the Central European University’s 20th Anniversary Career Achievement Award for Notable Professional Achievements and is a former Fellow of the German Marshall Fund of the United States. He is the author of “The New Era of European Defense: EU and NATO’s Juxtaposition”, published by VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller from Germany.
