BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Dr. Keith David Barnard, MBBS, MRCS, LRCP

Dr. Keith David Barnard is a retired physician and Senior Fellow of New Westminster College. He graduated in 1966 from the Westminster Hospital Medical School, University of London earning the M.B., B.S., M.R.C.S., and L.R.C.P.

Dr. Barnard has a distinguished record of ethical leadership. He presently serves as Chair, Fareham Centre Practice Patient Participation Group and Non-executive Director and Lay Member of the Board of Governors of the Fareham and Gosport Clinical Commissioning Group. His professional experience includes:

  • August 2006: Appointed Managing Editor of Circulation: European Perspectives in Cardiology
  • March 2001: Appointed Medical Editor at GP. This involved working with the clinical news and news reporters, ensuring medical accuracy of content, commissioning and editing clinical articles, and proof reading and correcting all the clinical pages. For several years he wrote a regular weekly column for GPs, called Medicine on the Web, where he reviewed medical websites specific to particular clinical problems for accuracy and relevance. He also compiled an A-Z of 1,000 medical websites for GP Net magazine and the GP website.
  • June 2000: Retired from full-time medical practice and appointed Clinical Features Editor of GP Newspaper
  • 1998: Medical Advisor with GP Newspaper, a nationally distributed weekly paper for family doctors published by Haymarket Publishing.
  • 1986: Governor and Chair of Admissions at Cams Hill Secondary School, Fareham for about 10 years.
  • January 1976: Partner (general practice/family medicine) specialising in minor surgery and joint injection in Fareham, Hampshire, UK
  • August 1973:  Joined group practice as a GP in Margate, Kent, UK
  • 1967 to July 1973: Commissioned as an officer in the Royal Air Force for 6 years as hospital-based medical specialist. Gained experience in Air-Sea Recue, and tropical medicine during two and a half years in the Far East (Singapore, Malaya, Australia, Nepal and Thailand). Left with the rank of Squadron Leader.

Besides a great number of articles for GP, Circulation: European Perspectives and other publications including the New Statesman, Dr. Barnard has prepared numerous fact sheets on topics such as managing back pain, dealing with fever, and hormone replacement therapy. He wrote several chapters of a soft back Medical Imprint book on endocrinology for primary care (published 2005), and has also written and had published three full length novels, medical thrillers, in 1990, 1992, (Souvenir Press) and 2000 (Citron Press).
