BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: His Excellency Ambassador Shahid Kamal, B.A., M.A.

Ambassador Shahid Kamal is a Distinguished Fellow of New Westminster College. He served as a career diplomat of Pakistan for 35 years in senior positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Prime Minister’s Office, United Nations, Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Diplomatic Missions in Paris, New York, Washington, Stockholm and Berlin.

Ambassador Kamal has diverse background and wide ranging experience in international affairs, diplomacy and public policy management. He has rich expertise in working with foreign governments, international organizations, parliamentary associations, academic institutions, business groups and non-governmental organizations. He has strong advocacy and networking skills. Ambassador Kamal’s distinguished record of ethical leadership and diplomacy and his professional experience includes:

• March 2013 – Present: : Advisor to the Rector, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology

• February 2012 – March 2013: Advisor, Committee for Scientific & Technological Cooperation, Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)

• September 2007 – January 2012: Ambassador of Pakistan to the Federal Republic of Germany

• March 2005 – August 2007: Additional Foreign Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Pakistan

• June 2001 – March 2005: Ambassador of Pakistan to Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Latvia

• June 1998 – February 2000: Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Pakistan

• June 1995 – February 1998: Advisor to Secretary General and Head of the Political Department, Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)

• November 1991 – July 1994: Senior Aide to the Prime Minister of Pakistan

• June 1988 – November 1991: Director India in the South Asia Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Pakistan

• October 1987 – May 1988: Director for Organization and Management, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Pakistan

Ambassador Kamal has represented Pakistan in UN Climate Change negotiations and is member of the Pakistan Government’s Advisory Group on Climate Change. He has taken several initiatives to launch science & technology projects in collaboration with foreign governments, universities, and scientific institutions.He was instrumental in the setting up the Center for Advanced Studies in Telecommunications at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology in Islamabad.He takes keen interest in promoting entrepreneurship. He was involved in supporting the establishment of the Center for Entrepreneurial Development at the Institute of Business Administration in Karachi which is a leading institution in Pakistan. He was the Chief Co-ordinator of the Foreign Office in organizing an International Donor’s Conference in Islamabad and played a key role on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in re-building a high school for girls in Azad Kashmir after the massive earthquake on 8 October 2005.

Ambassador Kamal is a graduate of the Pakistan Civil Services Academy, Pakistan Administrative Staff College and the National Institute of Public Management. His formal education includes:
