BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Captain Ruud Ramaekers, Royal Netherlands Navy

Captain Ruud Ramaekers is a senior officer in the Royal Netherlands Navy and Senior Fellow of New Westminster College. He has an outstanding record of ethical leadership.

Captain Ruud Ramaekers joined the navy in 1978 as a midshipman at the Royal Netherlands Naval College. After receiving his commission as an officer in 1981, he joined the Netherlands Submarine Service. After several operational appointments in submarines, he completed the Principal Warfare Course and returned to submarines as an Anti-Submarine Warfare specialist. He spent 4 years in the program to introduce the Walrus-class submarines into the Netherlands Navy. After several operational missions he successfully passed “Perisher” (the UK Submarine Commanding Officers Qualifying Course) and brought HNLMS Walrus into service as her first commanding officer. In 1993, he joined the staff of NL Submarine squadron as operations planner and command sea rider. In 1995, Captain Ramaekers attended the Higher Staff Course at the Netherlands Defence College, where he broadened his keen interest in international relations. After an operational tour as Executive Officer in the frigates HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerck and HNLMS Van Speijk, he was posted to the UK at HMS Dryad where he lectured to warfare students and prospective commanding officers in Joint Warfare, ASW and diesel electric submarine operations.

In 2000, Captain Ramaekers was promoted to the rank of Commander and returned to the Netherlands as Chief of Staff and Head of Operations and Training with the NL submarine command. In this job he was poster as Senior National Representative and Liaison with US NAVCENT in Bahrain. Upon his return, he was appointed as Commanding Officer (acting) of the Netherlands Submarine Service. Afterwards, he commanded HNLMS Van Amstel for a short period before he was appointed as Head of the Office of Commander in Chief, Royal Netherlands Navy. Promotion to captain followed in 2005. In October 2007, he became commanding officer of the Air Defence and Command Frigate HNLMS De Zeven Provincien. He participated in several multinational training missions and commanded the ship during the Operation Allied Protector, conducting counter-piracy operations in the coastal water of the Horn of Africa and off the coast of Somalia. On completion of his tour at the end of 2009, he worked on a project basis for 6 months. After a year of study at the Royal College for Defence Studies in London, he graduated and became a Member of RCDS. After a tour in the operational support directorate, he became the Head of Maritime Support in the newly restructured Royal Netherlands Navy.
