BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Colonel Ralph D. Thiele, MBA – Bundeswehr of Germany (Ret’d)

Colonel Ralph D. Thiele is a retired senior officer of the Bundeswehr of Germany and Senior Fellow of New Westminster College. He has a distinguished record of ethical leadership and is the Chairman of the Political-Military Society in Berlin, Germany. Colonel Thiele has gained in 40 years of politico-military service an extensive broad political, technological, academic and military background. In the past 15 years he has developed the Political-Military Society in Berlin into a well-respected forum of high reputation.

Colonel Thiele has studied business administration (MBA) and political science in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. In several commanding officer assignments, he has developed valuable operational expertise. While serving in the Ministry of Defense, in the personal staffs of the German Armed Forces Vice Chief of Defense Staff and the NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and in the Planning and Policy Staff of the German Minister of Defense, he has been directly involved in national and international force planning, in national, European and NATO strategic, technological and political issues and has advised key national and international political and military leaders.

As commander of the Bundeswehr Transformation Center in Waldbröl, Germany, Colonel Thiele made this agency the driving force for the transformation of the Bundeswehr. In this context, he was particularly successful in:

introducing transformation and network centric warfare to the Bundeswehr and advancing the respective conceptual and organizational aspects; and deepening the cooperation with industry, the Directorate General for Armaments at the Federal Ministry of Defense, the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement and the Bundeswehr IT Office; and intensifying international cooperation particularly within the multinational experimentation context (USA, Great Britain, France, Australia, Italy, Germany), but also with Austria and Switzerland; and building up the concept development & experimentation and modeling and simulation capabilities of the Bundeswehr; and innovating German defense planning.

In his academic assignments,  Colonel Theile has been the Chef de Cabinet and Chief of Staff at the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy, and Director of Faculty at the German General Staff and Command College in Hamburg, Germany. He has also been involved in numerous German, Austrian and European Security Research Programs. In his present function as Director of Project Management, German Air Force Office, he has been focusing on the issues of:

  • Space Situational Awareness
  • Protection of Critical Infrastructure
  • Unmanned Aircraft Systems
  • Air Surface Integration
  • Joint Fires
  • Cyber Defense
  • Modeling, Simulation and Knowledge Management

Colonel Thiele has published numerous books and articles and is lecturing widely in Europe, Asia (Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, and Ulaanbaatar) and in the USA and Brazil on current security affairs and defense planning. He is a member of the German Atlantic Association and member of the Defense Science Board that advises the Austrian Minister of Defense.
