BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Colonel The Reverend Jean Bourgeois, CD, BTh, MCL

 Colonel The Reverend Jean Bourgeois is a Colonel and Chaplain in the Canadian Army and Senior Fellow of New Westminster College. He earned a Bachelor of Theology in 1982 from Saint Paul University in Ottawa, Ontario and a Masters degree in Canon Law in 1999, also from Saint Paul University.

Colonel (Padre) Bourgeois has an outstanding record of ethical leadership. Upon ordination in 1984, he was appointed pastor of three rural parishes and he enrolled in the Canadian Forces, serving as the Unit Chaplain of the 8th Canadian Hussars Princess Louise Regiment until 1988, when he joined the Regular Force.

For more than twenty years, Colonel (Padre) Bourgeois has served with the Royal Canadian Dragoon in Petawawa and in Cyprus, and with the 1st Canadian Field Hospital in Saudi Arabia in 1991. He was promoted to the rank of Major in 1992 and appointed Brigade Chaplain of the 5th Canadian Mechanized Brigade in Valcartier until 1995, during which period he deployed to Croatia with 5 Service Battalion. From 1995 to 1997, he was appointed Chaplain to the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario. In 1999, he was appointed Chancellor of the Military Ordinariate (Roman Catholic) of Canada and appointed Judicial Vicar in 2001.

Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 2003, he exercised his ministry within the Office of the Chaplain General in Ottawa as Director of Chaplaincy Administration, Education and Training 3. He commanded the Canadian Forces Chaplain School and Centre from 2005 to 2007 and subsequently assumed the responsibilities of the Area Chaplain within Land Forces Central Area until 2010, when he was promoted to his present rank of Colonel.

Colonel (Padre) Bourgeois assumed the responsibilities of the Directorate of Chaplain Operations in Ottawa in 2010 and that of Vicar General of the Military Ordinariate (Roman Catholic) of Canada in 2011.

Colonel (Padre) Bourgeois’ awards and decorations include the Canadian Decoration (CD) and other service and campaign medals.
