BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Professor Dr. Tariq H. Cheema, M.D.

Professor Dr. Tariq Cheema is a Governor on the Board of Governors and Distinguished Fellow of New Westminster College. He received his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Istanbul University. He is also a Next Generation Leadership Fellow at the Rockefeller Foundation and has completed Advanced Studies in Philanthropy at Loyola University of Chicago, Advanced Studies in International Health Leadership at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Advanced Studies in Executive Education, Advanced Leadership and Management at the Madinah Institute of Leadership and Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Cheema is a renowned social innovator and philanthropist who has devoted his life to making world a peaceful, equitable, and sustainable place for all. He is the founder of the World Congress of Muslim Philanthropists, a global network of affluent individuals, foundations and socially conscious corporations dedicated to advance efficient and accountable giving. Dr. Tariq Cheema is one of the Rockefeller Foundation’s prestigious Next Generation Leadership Fellows and holds expertise in the areas of strategic philanthropy, impact investing and entrepreneurship, corporate giving, and foundation management.

Dr. Cheema ranks among the 500 most influential Muslims impacting the world today and has extensive experience in working globally with international leaders, grant-makers, corporations, and financial institutions. As an expert on Muslim philanthropy he offers advice to policymakers on giving regulations and reforms, speaks on high-level forums, and sits on multiple nonprofit boards.

Dr. Tariq Cheema is a member of the Committee of 100 of Lingshan World Philanthropy Forum that promotes engagement between China and the World on social and development issues. In addition to his philanthropic endeavors, he is the principal shareholder of Southeast Business Group (SBG), a unique commercial and industrial coalition dedicated to promoting trade between emerging markets.

Over the past two decades, Dr. Tariq Cheema has contributed to the development of several successful social initiatives such as Orthopak; Doctors Worldwide; Network of Islamic Activists Against Tobacco (NIAAT); Diversity Forums; Indo-Pak Peace Network; and recently the National Network for Diaspora Giving; and Muslim Science, Technology, Innovation (MSTI) initiative aiming to develop a “Knowledge Ecosystem” for economic benefit and social good.

Dr. Cheema has received numerous honours and awards, including: the United States Congressional Award from the Unites States House of Representatives, Northwestern University’s Kellogg Entrepreneurship Award, the Asian American Community Service Award from the Asian American Coalition of Chicago, and the South Asia Peace Award from the YMCA.
