BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Lieutenant General Anil Malik, AVSM, MSc, MPhil

Lieutenant General Anil Malik is retired senior General Officer of the Indian Army and a Distinguished Fellow of New Westminster College. He is a graduate of the Indian Military Academy at Dehradun (1973-1975) and has earned a Master of Science in Defence Studies from the University of Madras (1987-1988) and a Master of Philosophy in Defence and Strategic Studies from the  Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (1998-1999) and graduated from the National Defence College in New Delhi in 2006.

Lieutenant General Malik has a distinguished record of ethical leadership and was commissioned into the 8th Light Cavalry in June 1975.  During his military career he has had extensive national and international exposure and has held important command and staff appointments at different levels of the military hierarchy including those involving policy making.

Lieutenant General Malik has commanded an Armoured Brigade and an Armoured Division as part of a Strike Corps.  He has held varied staff appointments which include General Staff appointments in a Mountain Brigade in High Altitude, Military Operations Directorate at Army Headquarters, an Infantry Division, Colonel General Staff of a Mountain division in Counter Insurgency Operations and Deputy Military Secretary at a Command Headquarters. He has been an Instructor at the Defence Services Staff College (Wellington), Chief Instructor, Defence Services Command and Staff College (Zambia), and Senior Directing Staff at the prestigious National Defence College (New Delhi), which conducts the National Security and Strategic Studies Course for Officers of the Defence and Civil Services, including from foreign countries. He has also been the Commandant of the Armoured Corps Centre and School, the premier institution for tactical and technical training on Tank Warfare.

Lieutenant General Malik was the Director General Discipline, Ceremonials and Welfare at the Army Headquarters before his superannuation on 31 May 2013. In his last appointment he was responsible for direct supervision of all aspects of Discipline, Vigilance and Legal Departments of the Army, policy formulation and coordination of ceremonial activities at the National level and welfare measures for both serving and veteran soldiers. He was also responsible for oversight of the Army Welfare Education Society, which runs 120 Army Public Schools, 239 Pre- primary Schools and 12 professional colleges for nearly two Lac students.

Lieutenant General Malik is a life member of both the United Services Institute and the Centre for Land Warfare Studies. His honours, decorations and awards include:

• 2014: Distinguished Fellow, New Westminster College

• 2013: Ati Vishishst Seva Medal (Awarded by the President of India for Distinguished Service)

• 2008-2013: Honourary Colonel, 8th Light Cavalry

• 2010-2013: Honourary Colonel, 56th Armoured Regiment

• 2011-2013: Honourary Colonel, 13th Armoured Regiment

• 2012-2013: Honourary Colonel, 65th Armoured Regiment

• 2008: Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card

• 2007: General Officer Commanding in Chief’s Commendation Card
