BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Lieutenant Général Michel Stollsteiner, O-LOH, C-NOM, Général de corps d’Armée France

Lieutenant Général Michel Stollsteiner is a Lieutenant General of the French Army and Distinguished Fellow of New Westminster College. He is a graduate of the St Cyr Military College (1976 – 1978), Joint Staff Course at the German Fuehrungs Akademie in Hamburg (1991-1993), French Joint Staff College in Paris (1993-1994), and was a Delegate at the Hoeherefuehrung (Senior Bundeswehr Officer Seminar) conducted in Berlin, Brussels, New York and Paris (August 2003 to October 2003). He has language proficiency in French, English and German.

Lieutenant Général Stollsteiner has a distinguished record of ethical leadership and presently serves as Government Defence Adviser, Cabinet of the Minister of Defence of France. His professional leadership experience includes:

  • 2013 to present: Government Defence Adviser, Cabinet of the Minister of Defence of France
  • 2012-2013: Deputy Chief of Staff and Director of Plans (J5, J7, Joint Capability Planning and Force Generation), Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, NATO
  • 2009-2012: Deputy Chief of Staff Capabilities Plans and Policy, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, NATO. Responsible for four Directorates. Lead for review of operational manpower requirements (12,000 posts) of new NATO Command Structure.
  • 2008-2009: Commander, Regional Command, Kabul, Afghanistan. Senior French Military Representative for national contribution to ISAF (3,800 troops) comprised of a multi-national force of 3,000.
  • 2004-2008: Director of French Army Operations Center in Paris. Responsible for management of human resources, logistics and financial elements of French Army contributions to national operational commitments (inter-service integration).
  • January 2004 – Jul 2004: MA to Commander, Force Licorne. Operational tour in Ivory Coast
  • 2001-2004:  Responsible for French Army Training and Readiness. Support to preparation of Euro Corps to achieve NATO standards. Lead for the 1st CAX division level.
  • 1999-2001: Commander, 8th Marine Parachute Regiment. Operational tour in Kosovo (1,200 troops).
  • 1996-1999: French Exchange Officer with German Army Staff, Bonn, Germany. Lead for robotics, force protection, concepts and digitalisation.
  • 1994-1996: Lead for Operations and Training, 8th Marine Parachute Regiment. Two operational tours in Sarajevo (1,500 troops).
  • 1979-1991:  Commander and Parachute Regimental Officer. Four operational tours in Africa. Commander of 30-150 troops.

Lieutenant Général Stollsteiner’s decorations and honours include:

  • Commandeur  de l’Ordre National du Mérite – France
  • Citations for Distinguished Military Service – France and NATO
  • Distinguished Fellow of New Westminster College – Canada
  • Lieutenant General Stollsteiner is a member and active participant of the French Historic Society and has published works on the French Army in the 18th century.
