BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Major General Berndt Grundevik, SFNWC

Major General Berndt Grundevik is a Senior Fellow of New Westminster College. He has a distinguished record of ethical leadership and is a retired Major General of the Swedish Army. He started his military career at the 17th  Infantry Regiment in Uddevalla in 1976. As a conscript Squad Leader, he served in the Sinai Desert during 1977, before starting his training to become a commissioned officer.

He was commissioned as a 1/LT in 1981 as Rifle Platoon Commander at the Royal Svea Lifeguards Regiment, where he served as Platoon Commander until 1985. During this period, he was promoted to Captain in 1983.

Before 1986, when Grundevik attended the Swedish War College general course in 1985, he served in the UN mission in Cyprus as a platoon commander.

After graduating from the War College, Grundevik returned to the Royal Svea Lifeguards as 2 IC of a rifle company. In 1988, he was commissioned Company Commander at the Lapland Ranger Regiment, a position where he stayed for two years and was promoted Major (1989), until heading south to the Infantry Combat School as an instructor from 1990 to 1992.

From 1992 to 1994, Major General Grundevik attended the Swedish War College Advanced course. After graduation, and now as a General Staff Officer, he served as ADC to the Commander of the Swedish Army for the following two years. Finishing the service in the Headquarters, he once again returned to the academic world, this time as a Deputy Course Director at the Swedish National Defence College.

As a newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel in 1997, he was assigned to the 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade as Deputy Commander.

In 1999, he was assigned to the Swedish National Defence College as Course Director for the Advanced Course. He was promoted to Colonel in 2000, and between 2002 and 2005, he was assigned to be Commanding Officer at the Life Regiment Hussars in Karlsborg. During this assignment, he also served as Senior Operations Officer/CJOC in NATO CJTF Staff, Istanbul, Turkey for a shorter period.

After leaving the Life Regiments Hussars, he returned to the Headquarters as Chief of Planning, Plans and Policy in 2005 and was promoted to Brigadier General. In January 2007, he was assigned the position of Task Force Commander (COM MNTF C) in Kosovo for six months.

From November 2007, he served as Chief of Staff of the Swedish Army and was promoted to Major General on 1 November 2007. He served in this position until 2012, when he assumed the position of Deputy Chief of Joint Operations in the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters in Stockholm.

Since September 2013, he served as the Swedish Senior Member to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission in Korea, a position that he held until 29th April 2015.

Major General Grundevik is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences and attended the Senior Officers’ International Defence Management Course, and the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in July 2006.
