BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Major General Sergio d’Oliveira, BA, SFNWC

Major General Sergio d’Oliveira is a Senior Fellow of New Westminster College and has a distinguished record of ethical leadership. His last duty assignment before his retirement in 2014 was as the Commander of the 1st Army Division of the Uruguayan Army.

Major General d’Oliveira joined the Military Academy in February 1973, graduating as an Ensign in December 1976. As his first assignment, he is stationed in the 7th Infantry Battalion as Infantry Platoon Leader and Mortar Platoon leader.  In 1978, he is transferred to the Branches and Services School, initially as Platoon Leader and later as Company Commander in the Support Battalion and as instructor in the NCO School.  In 1981, he goes back to the 7th Infantry Battalion as the Rifle Co. Executive Officer, and later as Heavy Weapons Company Commander. In 1982, he is transferred to the 12th Infantry Battalion again in the Heavy Weapons Company.  Thereafter, he is reassigned to the Montevideo Garrison, where he serves in the Defense Intelligence Service.  In 1987, he returns to de Branches and Services School as Instructor in the Infantry Officers Advanced Course. In 1993, he is assigned to the Superior Military Studies Institute, where he works as Secretary of Doctrine Division, Command Course Director and later General Staff Course Director.  After his promotion as Colonel, he works as Training Area Chief in the G-3 Army General Staff. In 2000, he is assigned as 3rd Infantry Brigade Commander.  In 2003, he is designated in the Armed Forces Health Services, first as Engineering and Architect Director and later as Armed Forces Central Hospital Director.  In 2005, he performs as Minister of Defense Aide.  In 2006, he is promoted to Major General and assigned as Military Academy Director.  In February 2008, he returns to the Armed Forces Health Services, as National Director and Head of the System. In February 2010, he is assigned to the Embassy of Uruguay in the United States as Defense Attaché, Chief of the Armed Forces Mission and Chief of Delegation to the Inter-American Defense Board. In 2011, he assumes command of the Army Education Command and Director of the Military Institute for Superior Studies.  Thereafter, he was assigned as the Army Chief of Staff. He assumed command of the 1st Army Division in 2012 and retired in that position in 2014.
