Rear Admiral Dr. Adriaan Hopperus Buma is surgeon, medical doctor, and a Senior Fellow of New Westminster College. He studied at the Universiteit Utrecht from 1974 to 1981 and earned a M.D. in Medicine. He also studied at the Universiteit van Amsterdam and earned a Ph.D. in Medicine in 1999. Rear Admiral Buma’s specialties include: Healthcare, Public Health, Travel Medicine, Medical Teaching and Military Medicine.

Rear Admiral Buma has a distinguished record of ethical leadership and retired from the Royal Netherlands Navy in 2012 with the rank of Rear Admiral (Lower Half). He presently serves as Owner of Buma Health Care Services with present consultancies to the Travel Clinic Havenziekenhuis in Rotterdam and the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. Rear Admiral Buma was a Navy Surgeon in the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1982 to 2012 and his other leadership experience includes:

  • 1990-96: Head of Naval Medical Training
  • 1996-99: Medical Plans Officer NATO Headquarters, Northwood, United Kingdom
  • 1999-2001: Deputy Director Medical Service Royal Netherlands Navy, The Hague
  • 2001-2004: Head of Health Care and Welfare Branch to Admiral Netherlands Fleet
  • 2004-2007: Commanding Officer of the Institute for Defense and Partnership Hospitals
  • LTD 17, 2007: Advanced Defense Management Studies Course
  • 2008: Senior Consultant to the Surgeon General
  • 2008-2012: Inspector General Military Health Care

Rear Admiral Buma’s deployments included:

  • 1995: Commanding Officer, Netherlands Field Dressing Station, St. Martin (after Hurricane Luis)
  • 1999: Deputy Force Medical Adviser, AFOR, Albania

Rear Admiral Buma’s publications include:

  • 1991: PhD thesis, Epidemiological Studies on Morbidity and Preventive Strategies during a Peace Support Operation in Cambodia, University of Amsterdam.
  • 1997: Co-author, Textbook Medical Care of the Catastrophes, Royal Society of Medicine, London, U.K.
  • 2000: Co-author, Textbook of Military Medicine: Preventive Medicine, Borden Institute, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington D.C., U.S.A.
  • 2005: Co-author, Ballistic Trauma, Springer-Verlag, London, U.K.
  • 2009 to 2013: Lead Editor and Co-author, Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine, Springer-Verlag, London, U.K., (2nd ed., 2009 and upcoming 3rd ed., 2013).
  • 2012 to Present: Several articles on Travel Medicine in (inter)national medical journals. 

Rear Admiral Buma’s other achievements and honours include:

  • Deputy Convener for the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London (UK) for “The Diploma in the Medical Care of Catastrophes” (DMCC). 
  • 1993-1999: Instructor, Battlefield Advanced Trauma Life Support (NL/UK). 
  • 1998-2006: Member, Scientific Committee for five European Conferences on Travel Medicine (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006). 
  • 2011: Chairman, Session on Military Medicine, World Conference on Travel Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. 
  • June 2002: Peer Reviewer, Journal of Travel Medicine. 
  • 2002: Member, Taskforce, Water-related Disasters, World Conference on Drowning.
  • 2000-2011: Board Member, Dutch Medical Nautical Association. 
  • 2007 to present: Board Member, Rotterdam Medical Society “In Sociorum Salutem”. 
  • 2008: Recipient of the 25th Michael E. DeBakey International Military Surgeons Award, USUHS, Bethesda Maryland, USA. 
  • 2009: Member, Supervisory Council of the Dutch Burns Foundation (2009). 
  • 2009: Knighted to Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. 
  • 2010: Fellow, Faculty Travel Medicine, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. 
  • 2012: Chairman, Scientific Committee, 2nd ICMM Pan-European Congress on Military Medicine, Amsterdam.
  • 2012: Appointed as a Senior Fellow of New Westminster College in recognition of a distinguished record of ethical leadership, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
