BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: Professor Dr. Ruben Safrastyan, PhD

Professor Dr. Ruben Safrastyan is a Senior Fellow at New Westminster College and has a distinguished record of ethical leadership. He earned his PhD in Oriental and Turkish Studies at the Yerevan State University, where he serves as a Professor of Oriental and Turkish Studies. He concurrently serves as Director at the Institute of Oriental Studies, National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.

Professor Safrastyan was elected as Corresponding Member of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences. He previously served as a Counselor of the Armenian Embassy in Germany and was the Deputy Director of the Department of Political Analysis for the Office of the President of Armenia. Professor Safrastyan is founding editor of the academic periodical, The Turkic and Ottoman Studies, and Editor of the Academic Yearbook of Peoples and Countries of the Near and Middle East in Yerevan, Armenia.

Professor Safrastyan’s recent publications include:

  • Ottoman Empire: Genesis of the Program of Genocide (1876-1920)
  • Turkey and Eurasia in the Aftermath of the September 11 Tragedy: Some Observations on Geopolitics and Foreign Policy

  • The Return of ‘Grey Wolves: Conservative Party in Turkish Politics (1983-1985)
  • Kuleli Incident: Armenian Sources; Patterns of Ottoman Politics towards Christians during Tanzimat: From Equal Rights to Ottomanization and to Genocidal Intent

Professor Safrastyan has received Humboldt (Germany), Fulbright (USA), New Westminster College (Canada), and International Policy (Hungary) fellowships and conducted research at the universities of Bochum, Berkeley, and Budapest. His international activities include memberships of the International Boards of World Security Network Foundation, N.Y. (USA) and Nebula online international academic periodical, University of Sydney (Australia) as well as standing contribution to the International Analyst Network, N.Y. (USA) and Global Politician, N.Y. (USA).

For his professional achievements Professor Safrastyan was decorated with the Armenian Presidential Medal “Movses Khorenatsi” as well as other awards.
